Hither Creek
Nantucket Shingle ∙ Residential
Perched on the western edge of Nantucket, with sweeping views of Hither Creek, Madaket Harbor, and the Atlantic, this home had been in the family for generations but had gradually lost its connection to the landscape. Over time, renovations and additions had obscured its original intent, prioritizing structure over setting.
Our approach was twofold: restore the home’s architectural soul while designing a retreat that would evolve for years to come. We began by removing a non-historic fireplace that bisected the main living space, reclaiming sightlines and reestablishing a natural flow throughout.
A layered approach to materiality and craftsmanship brings warmth and authenticity back to the home:
Historically accurate 12-inch-wide pine floors, lacquered wood beams, and shiplap-wrapped jib doors.
A Calacatta Turquoise marble backsplash, balancing old-world charm with modern refinement.
A custom banquette facing the sea, replacing traditional barstools and creating a space for gathering.
A tonal palette drawn from the soft grays, aqua, and duck egg blues of Hither Creek’s ever-changing tides.
A mix of contemporary and antique elements—swivel chairs, a bobbin chair, a woven cane and mirrored bar, and a 200-year-old narwhal tusk—for a collected, storied aesthetic.
Designing a project on an island—especially one where neither we nor the clients were on-site for the majority of the process—required precision, expertise, and deep trust in the process. Every decision, from sourcing to installation, was executed with meticulous attention to detail.
The result is a home that feels both personal and profoundly connected to its setting—one that will carry the legacy of Hither Creek forward for generations to come.
